Travel Insurance & COVID-19
The coronavirus pandemic has had an impact on all travel insurance policies resulting in many differences in cover.

Although Insurers and Travel Companies may offer ‘Covid-19 cover’, it is unlikely that any of them will protect you from the full range of possible coronavirus-related incidents. While policies may provide cover for cancellation due to diagnosis of coronavirus, self-isolation without having a positive test or emergency medical situations and repatriation you will find that most do not provide cover for cancellation due to the actions of government imposed lockdowns or travel restrictions.

Existing Medical Conditions:
Generally, you will not be covered for any claims arising as a result of a pre-existing medical condition UNLESS this was disclosed to your travel insurance provider before the policy was taken out and cover was agreed.

If you have a serious medical condition or if an Insurer imposes ‘terms’ (as shown below) we recommend you approach a specialist travel insurance provider who may be able to provide you with a quote. We suggest you contact either: –

  1. The Money & Pensions Service has created a directory which can be found here or by calling 0800 138 7777 – Monday to Friday, 8am – 6pm
  2. British Insurance Brokers Association’s (BIBA) travel medical directory which can be found here

All firms in the directories are authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and have been through a rigorous selection process to prove their specialism.

Terms means any of the following: –
(1) declines, or otherwise does not offer, a consumer a quotation due (wholly or partly) to a medical condition;
(2) cancels a consumer’s policy due (wholly or partly) to a medical condition;
(3) offers a policy with a medical condition exclusion which cannot be removed from the policy;
(4) offers a policy with a medical condition premium of £100 or more; and/or
(5) offers a policy in respect of which the medical condition premium is not known.
