Travel Insurance & COVID-19
The coronavirus pandemic has had an impact on all travel insurance policies resulting in many differences in cover.
Although Insurers and Travel Companies may offer ‘Covid-19 cover’, it is unlikely that any of them will protect you from the full range of possible coronavirus-related incidents. While policies may provide cover for cancellation due to diagnosis of coronavirus, self-isolation without having a positive test or emergency medical situations and repatriation you will find that most do not provide cover for cancellation due to the actions of government imposed lockdowns or travel restrictions.
Existing Medical Conditions:
Generally, you will not be covered for any claims arising as a result of a pre-existing medical condition UNLESS this was disclosed to your travel insurance provider before the policy was taken out and cover was agreed.
If you have a serious medical condition or if an Insurer imposes ‘terms’ (as shown below) we recommend you approach a specialist travel insurance provider who may be able to provide you with a quote. We suggest you contact either: –
- The Money & Pensions Service has created a directory which can be found here or by calling 0800 138 7777 – Monday to Friday, 8am – 6pm
- British Insurance Brokers Association’s (BIBA) travel medical directory which can be found here
All firms in the directories are authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and have been through a rigorous selection process to prove their specialism.
Terms means any of the following: –
(1) declines, or otherwise does not offer, a consumer a quotation due wholly or partly) to a medical condition;
(2) cancels a consumer’s policy due (wholly or partly) to a medical condition;
(3) offers a policy with a medical condition exclusion which cannot be removed from the policy;
(4) offers a policy with a medical condition premium of £100 or more; and/or
(5) offers a policy in respect of which the medical condition premium is not known.
What our customers say
“Ian Hayes of Munro Greenhalgh has been our Insurance Broker for a number of years. You would expect to see an insurance broker only when there is a claim – but that is definitely not the case with Ian and the team at Munro-Greenhalgh. It also helps that Ian is a passionate cricketer himself - he completely understands how a club operates and the risks associated with it. Our club has undergone recent developments including extending our pavilion and purchasing new machinery. We have regular review meetings to keep up to date with any changes and they provide a full risk management service that is tailored to our club's needs. “I arrived at the showroom one morning to find it absolutely swimming in water. A new water heater fitted the day before had leaked out all night and flooded the premises. I rang Ian at Munro Greenhalgh and within half an hour he was sweeping the water out! We got some heaters going and with a lot of hard work, managed to continue trading. A massive thanks to Ian for his efforts that morning! Munro’s then organised settlement of the claim with the insurers, talking us through the process so that it all happened quickly and successfully. Ian represents real customer service and we are extremely happy to have Munro Greenhalgh protecting our business. Craig Armstrong, Burning Desire Fireplace Centre, Ramsbottom:”
“We have a really good working relationship – they are easy going, approachable and react quickly. A recent claim (for flood damage) was dealt with swiftly and effectively. Running a business like Thompson Jones requires a certain amount of trust in specialist suppliers and we rely upon Munro Greenhalgh to understand our needs and keep us covered and protected.” David Smith, Director at Munro Greenhalgh agrees: “Thompson Jones are our Accountants and we work together really well – they provide excellent advice, are a proactive team and their tailor-made approach comes from them understanding us as a business.

“Munro Greenhalgh have been with us from the start – 1998 – and even before that for my Dad’s business. You would expect to see an insurance broker only when there is a claim – but that is definitely not the case with Stephen. We have regular meetings to keep up to date with any changes and they provide a full risk management service that is tailored to my business’s needs. The nature of my business – especially with the carriage of heavy plant for construction sites – means that I must have appropriate protection and I trust in Munro’s to provide this.

“Ian has looked after us for 20 years now. The regular visits to update our cover and complete the form filling in mean we are confident that our business is properly protected. And we know, first hand, how important that is! When a removals van almost removed our canopy a few years back, Ian was here until the early hours making sure that the canopy was taken down carefully and within the law. He also managed to negotiate on our behalf an acceptable early settlement with the insurers. I would not hesitate to recommend Munro Greenhalgh – they are easy to deal with and crucial to the smooth running of our business.”

“We invited Munro Greenhalgh in at the 11th hour really – after they were recommended locally. From that moment they have showed that they understand the needs of a manufacturing business like ours. Saving us a considerable amount of money – I think it was around a 40% saving - on our combined commercial policy without compromising our levels of cover is great business! They have also been proactive in handling a claim for us that we previously almost gave up on. Working with Munro’s is now an integral part of our company and knowing that we are properly covered allows us to get on and maintain our business growth.”
